- Owls have large eyes and feathery ridges that when combined often make them look as if they’re questioning all your life choices.
Posted at: 4/28/2026, 5:44:14 PM - R to @NatlParkService: Owl eyeballs are actually elongated tubes, anchored in place by a bony structure in the skull called the sclerotic ring. Because of this, owls can’t move or roll their eyes within their sockets. So, when an owl stares at you, it’s not actually judging you...it just can’t look away.
Finally, did you know owls have three eyelids? One is for blinking, one for sleeping, and one for keeping their eye "tubes" clean. We could have added a joke, but the owl just slowly blinked at us.

Mr. Lenze served in General Patton's Third Army from 1944 to 1946, as the Allies pushed into Germany and ended the war in Europe. At the memorial, Mr. Lenze and his family were given a special tour by volunteer George Kerestes, and a group of schoolkids spontaneously came up to shake his hand and thank him for his service.

Posted at: 4/13/2026, 12:37:52 PM - R to @NatlParkService: You got this. In case you were wondering, a typical day for a prairie dog starts at dawn when they emerge from their burrows to forage for food. They’ll spend the morning searching for grasses, seeds, and roots, constantly keeping an eye out for predators. After a busy morning, prairie dogs may spend a good portion of the day maintaining their burrows and socializing with members of their colony.
They communicate through a series of barks and chirps to alert each other of potential dangers or to coordinate activities like a much-needed happy hour.
Posted at: 4/13/2026, 12:37:52 PM - R to @NatlParkService: Not only did the students advance critical maintenance needs here at the park, but they also gained valuable, real-world experience in historic preservation techniques. We appreciate their time, skill, and commitment to help preserve the Gettysburg battlefield for future generations.
Posted at: 4/7/2026, 3:03:13 PM - Park staff at @GettysburgNMP recently welcomed students from Williamson College of the Trades, who supported preservation efforts at the Devil’s Den parking lot through hands-on stonework rehabilitation. Their work included correcting existing damage, stabilization, capstone setting and repointing. These improvements contribute to the long-term stability and preservation of this nationally significant cultural landscape.
